Charles Godfrey Leland letters and poems, 1854-1866.

The collection consists of eleven items, including five hand-written letters, four hand-written poems, and two portraits of Leland. Includes: letter to Gen. George P. Morris, 27 Feb. 1854, concerning a proposed collection of new writings to be published "for our friend Clark's benefit;" to Joseph Knight, 15 Sept. 1863, in response to his inquiry about autographs of certain German authors; to George Ripley, 1 Apr. 1864, inviting him to contribute a work that can be used as an invitation for Philadelphia's Great Central fair. Also, to dear Doctor, 13 Sept. 1866, concerning some business of The Press; to H.C. Carey, 9 Sept. [no year], regretting he could not participate in a recent activity. Also, four poems: Northmen, come out, signed and dated April 1861; Ever free, signed and dated 8 Feb. 1864; poem headed From the German, undated; poem with first line, Hans Breitman gif a barty, undated. Also, two autographed engravings of Leland.

George Pope Morris (October 10, 1802 – July 6, 1864) was an American editor, poet, and songwriter. Henry Carey, American economist, was born in Philadelphia and initially devoted himself to the publishing business, which he inherited from his father. He was also interested in economics and in 1836 he published an article entitled, Essay on the rate of wages - subsequently expanded into a 3 vol. work: The principles of political economy, 1837-1840. Born in Philadelphia, humorist Charles Godfrey Leland wrote quality material in a variety of literary forms, but is best remembered for his light comic verse, often written in a German dialect.
